When your natural roots are starting to come through, you might think that it's time to get back into your stylist's chair. While you will want to schedule to have your roots touched up every six to eight weeks (or as often as you discuss with your stylist) you can also take a different approach.
Using a shadow root and starting to embrace your natural color at your roots can give you a longer break between visits to the salon. Keeping your roots natural is also a fantastic way to reduce the damage to your hair, since you're only coloring or lifting the ends of the hair that can more easily be cut off later on.
To start with, you have to think about your roots as a part of your color.
If you have brown roots with some grays, you might think about having a balayage highlight that brings in the cooler tones of platinum intermixed with brown lowlights, for example.
If your roots are currently bleached or lightened, your colorist can use a darker tone that matches your roots, so your new roots will blend seamlessly as the strands grow out.
When you keep your root darker, you don't have to use as much color or bleach on your hair. As it grows, reducing the number of services that reach your hair means that your hair will remain stronger and be able to grow longer without breakage.
